Seven Worst Foods For Your Teeth - Oct 13, 2014

We already know brushing and flossing every day can keep our teeth healthy.  But certain beverages can quickly undo all that hard work.  A recent study just released the Top 7 Worst Foods For Your Teeth.  Here they are:

  • Soft Drinks -- They strip teeth of enamel.  All soft drinks will impact healthy teeth, but the study found that clear, citrus-flavored bubbly beverages dissolve enamel 2 to 5 times more than colas.
  • Sports Drinks -- The high concentration of strong acids cause the deepest enamel damage, even when compared to sodas.
  • Energy Drinks -- More strong acids -- more enamel damage.
  • Fruit Juices -- Citrus, apple and berry juices are loaded with acids.
  • Fruit -- Watch oranges, lemons and limes in particular.
  • Sour Candy -- SweeTarts and Sour Patch Kids can be hard to resist.  But compared to regular chewy candy, hard candy or licorice, sour varieties have more acid and are harder on tooth enamel.
  • Vinegar -- It's often used in salad dressings, sauces, potato chips and pickles.  Vinegar is a low-fat way to add flavor to foods, but it's another liquid that will damage tooth enamel.

It's important to be aware of foods and beverages that have a high concentration of enamel-eating acid.  If you consume these foods, I recommend you brush your teeth or at least rinse with water afterward to get as much acid off your teeth as possible.
