Do You Know Which Toothbrush Is Best For You?  2/10/16

Plenty of people are brushing their teeth twice a day like the American Dental Association recommends, but many of them are using the wrong toothbrush.

Rebecca Wayne, Optima Dental Group's registered dental hygienist, says everyone, of all ages, should be using a toothbrush with SOFT bristles.  Some people think using toothbrushes with firmer bristles, labeled as medium or even hard, will help clean their teeth better.  But the opposite is true.  Wayne says those firmer bristles are just too abrasive and often times cause tooth recession and gum sensitivity.

This is what recession looks like:

The gums are pushed back so far they reveal part of the tooth's root.  And when that exposed root comes into contact with cold or hot foods or drinks the results can be very painful.

Here are some quick hygiene tips:

  1. Choose a toothbrush with SOFT bristles.  There are even some with Extra Soft or Ultra Soft bristles.  Choose one of those if you already have receding gums.
  2. Brush at least twice daily using small circles to clean each tooth and the gum line.  Don't scrub your teeth.  That, too, can lead to gum recession.
  3. Be sure to floss at least once a day to remove food particles and bacteria the toothbrush can't reach.
  4. NEVER share toothbrushes.
  5. Replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles begin to look frayed or discolored.
  6. Have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months.

Having the right toothbrush and the right dental hygiene plan will keep your teeth healthy and your smile bright.
