The Right Foods Keep Your Smile Bright -- July 13, 2011

Most everyone knows that cup of java that can wake you up in the morning can also stain your teeth.  But did you know there are foods that can actually keep your teeth looking white and healthy?

Of course, your best bet is to brush and floss regularly.  But when it comes what you eat, choose foods that increase saliva production.  That helps  wash food off your teeth and neutralize the acids that can lead to tooth decay.  Those foods include cheese, milk and sugar-free gum and drinks.

Preventing gum disease is crucial for keeping your teeth healthy and your smile bright.  To prevent inflammation and protect against gum disease, add more fish and flaxseed to your diet.  Both are rich sources of omega-3 acids.  Not only will these foods keep your teeth and gums healthy, they'll  improve your health overall.

Now for the foods to avoid:

  • sugary drinks and snacks that create bacteria that erodes tooth enamel
  • starchy foods like rice, potatoes and pasta which raise acid levels in your mouth
  • coffee, tea and red wine which can stain your teeth

Choose water and sugar-free drinks as often as you can.  They'll help wash acid-producing food from your teeth to keep your smile bright and beautiful.
