New Study Shows Dentistry Was An Ancient Occupation-Oct 1, 2012
Researchers have discovered what they believe is proof that dentistry existed thousands of years ago.
Italian researchers say a tooth found in an ancient human jawbone shows traces of beeswax filling. Excavation teams found the jawbone and tooth in Slovenia near Trieste. They estimate the tooth (pictured left) is about 6,500 years old. "This finding is perhaps the most ancient evidence of pre-historic dentistry in Europe," said Federico Bernardini, one of the lead researchers.
Scientists believe the filling was used to reduce the pain and sensitivity from a vertical crack in the enamel.
